PEO, Philanthropic Educational Organization, began in 1869 as a friendship society, a fellowship society, an all-inclusive society. The society has a Common United Purpose of supporting women with their educational goals. January 2019 will mark their 150th anniversary. Nationally, there are more than 230,000 members with 11 chapters located in the state of Maine. Membership is by invitation only. Women are encouraged to study leadership, social responsibility and international studies.
There are a variety of opportunities offered to women looking to attend higher education. Offerings include scholarships, beginning at the Star level for high school students through continuing education for all ages. The society also provides low interest student loans at 2% interest. International peace scholarships are available to women coming to the US from other countries only to return home and place there newly earned skills into their communities.
