The West Bay Rotary Club of Camden, Maine was chartered in May of 1986. A small group of charter members decided to create a breakfast club and was able to obtain the sponsorship of the well established Camden Rotary Club to create the new club. The Camden club was then, and continues now as a successful luncheon club. West Bay has grown in membership and dedication to the spirit of Rotary over the years. The members have made many significant contributions to the Midcoast community and to the greater Rotary world. Each year the club has made physical and financial contributions to worthy projects and organizations in the area. It has provided vocational scholarships to assist students and heating oil funds to the three area towns for distribution. Members have read to elementary school children under the 4 Way Test Reading program and funded microcredit banks in third world countries. While doing this, the club has supported international programs of Rotary International such as the world-wide program to eradicate polio. Added to all this is the camaraderie shared in participating in fundraising efforts like the annual West Bay Charities Christmas Tree sales, community auctions, Duck Derbies and like projects. Membership in West Bay and Rotary in general is the ultimate “feel good “experience. It is the opportunity to give back to the community and the world in need some of the good fortune Rotarians have received in their lives. It is the opportunity to share with others the ability to accomplish significant results when members work together for the good of others. The West Bay Rotary Club, in its 20 years of community effort, has been a fine example of what “Service Above Self” means to the world.
